For the first time, a candidate of Turkish Cypriot origin has been elected in the British general elections. Nesil Caliskan, representing the Labour Party, secured her victory in the Barking constituency in east London, according to the Kipris Post website.

Caliskan, 35, is of Cypriot descent and was born and raised in Britain to Turkish Cypriot parents. Her political journey began at the age of 15 when she joined the Labour Party. Her dedication to public service was further exemplified when she and her mother were elected to the Enfield Borough Council.

In addition to her political accomplishments, Caliskan is married to Turkish academic and writer Emre Caliskan. This year, the couple celebrated the birth of their first child.

Caliskan's election marks a significant milestone in British politics, highlighting the increasing diversity and representation in the country's political landscape.
