Nicosia is preparing to deploy drones in its latest battle against one of the capital’s smallest but most persistent nuisances: mosquitoes.
Mayor Charalambos Prountzos said the municipality is using technology and innovation to help protect public health by tackling mosquito outbreaks in areas where the insects gather and breed.
The drone program will soon be expanded to the Kateva stream in Pallouriotissa, as well as other locations identified as mosquito hotspots.
“Drones to protect public health? Of course, from the Municipality of Nicosia,” Prountzos wrote in a social media post announcing the initiative.
The municipality has not yet provided further details about how the drones will operate or which other areas will be covered. However, the plan is intended to give municipal teams another tool for reaching locations where mosquito problems can develop.
For residents who spend warmer evenings armed with repellent, electric devices, and the occasional well-aimed slipper, any extra help will probably be welcome.
Mosquitoes are more than an irritating soundtrack to summer nights. Large concentrations can become a public health concern, particularly around areas with stagnant water.
By using drones, the municipality hopes to show that new technology does not always have to mean something complicated or futuristic. Sometimes it can simply mean fewer bites, less buzzing, and a slightly more peaceful night’s sleep.
The mosquitoes, meanwhile, have yet to comment on Nicosia’s new air force.
