Nicosia says US-North Korea agreement 'absolutely positive development'

Nicosia has described the agreement between the United States and North Korea as an “absolutely impressive development” adding that better international relations can benefit Cyprus and the whole world.

Government spokesperson Prodromos Prodromou said hopefully the persistent problem with North Korea and the nuclear proliferation threat will end, adding that Cyprus stands to gain from such a development.

Prodromou said it is in Cyprus’ best interest for there to be international stability, citing a number of crises that have been affecting the world stage, including latest turmoil around the world but also troubling developments such as recent tensions between the US and the European Union.

“Surely these [problems] are not beneficial and they cause major concerns mainly in small countries, such as the Republic of Cyprus,” Prodromou said.

The spokesperson also argued the improvement of relations on the international stage can “be useful in the case of Cyprus, so that it can draw much sought-after attention that would convince Turkey to conduct meaningful negotiations.”
