Thinking about installing solar panels to cut your electricity bills? Police are urging people to do their homework after a Paphos resident allegedly lost €9,800 in a deal that never materialized.
A 67-year-old man was arrested on Thursday night in connection with an investigation into obtaining money through false representations, after police had been searching for him under a court-issued arrest warrant.
According to investigators, the case dates back to January 2024, when the suspect allegedly convinced a customer that he owned a company offering photovoltaic installations.
Police say the two agreed on the installation of solar panels, and the customer paid the agreed sum of €9,800.
But the work was never carried out.
As the investigation progressed, officers also discovered that the company the suspect allegedly claimed to represent did not exist.
The arrest comes at a time when more households in Cyprus are investing in solar energy to reduce soaring electricity costs, making the case a reminder for consumers to carefully verify contractors before handing over large sums of money.
The Paphos Criminal Investigation Department is continuing its investigation.
