Parents in custody after three-year-old’s fatal fall from Engomi apartment

Father reportedly alerted authorities after the boy fell from the sixth floor of the family’s apartment.

The parents of a three-year-old boy who died after falling from the sixth floor of an apartment building in Engomi have been arrested as police investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.

The child, aged three years and nine months, was found seriously injured in the ground-floor area of the building at around 6.15pm on Saturday.

According to information being examined by police, the boy had been inside the family’s sixth-floor apartment before falling into the ground-floor area. The family, which is of African origin, lived in the apartment with their children.

Police and ambulance crews rushed to the scene, and the boy was taken to Nicosia General Hospital. He died at around 6.50pm, shortly after arriving at the hospital.

His 32-year-old father and 33-year-old mother were subsequently arrested after police obtained judicial warrants as part of the investigation.

The father is understood to have realised what had happened and alerted the authorities following the fall.

Police are investigating possible offences including negligent acts, actual bodily harm and causing death through a reckless, negligent or dangerous act.

The exact circumstances of the fall remain under investigation by the Nicosia CID.
