A major breakthrough has occurred in the ongoing counter-terrorism investigation spanning Cyprus, Greece, and international security agencies. Members of the Larnaca Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have apprehended a 41-year-old foreign national believed to be the principal director of the network.
The suspect, a third-country national, was located in Asia and transported back to Cyprus following a closely coordinated international operation. On Saturday, the Larnaca District Court ordered that he be held in police custody for eight days to allow for further questioning.
Alleged command structure
According to investigative sources, police view the 41-year-old as the central figure responsible for coordinating and guiding the group's operations. Evidence suggests that three other suspects currently awaiting trial frequently traveled abroad to meet with him and receive specific operational instructions.
Senior law enforcement officials view this arrest as a pivotal moment in the inquiry. Investigators believe that interrogating the suspect will allow them to map out the entire organizational hierarchy and uncover its international support networks.
Existing charges and context
The newly detained suspect faces the same set of serious criminal charges as the three men previously arrested in connection with the case. These offenses encompass engagement in terrorist activities, membership in a criminal organization, conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to commit a felony, and conspiracy to launder illegal proceeds.
The case is already scheduled to come before the Larnaca Permanent Assize Court. The three initial defendants, a 54-year-old Palestinian man holding Cypriot citizenship alongside two individuals aged 32 and 38, are due for their next court appearance on August 6.
Files presented during earlier remand hearings indicate that prosecutors intend to link the 32-year-old and 38-year-old defendants to Hamas. Police allege that the individuals were actively planning attacks against Israeli interests located on the island. All these assertions remain subject to the ongoing criminal trial and have not yet been evaluated or proven in a court of law.
