Cyprus police gear up for extended crime-fighting initiative

Newsroom

The Cyprus Police have initiated a two-month operation spanning the entire island, aimed at conducting coordinated operations and systematic checks for crime prevention and combat, as stated by Police Spokesperson Christos Andreou to CNA.

When asked about the main topic featured on its front page on Tuesday, the newspaper "Phileleftheros," referencing a 16-page memorandum sent by the police leadership to all department heads and units of the police force, targeting the prevention and combating of serious and organized crime, Mr. Andreou stated it was an operational order that commenced last Friday and would last for two months.

"It is on a nationwide scale. A large number of police officers are participating, especially during the nighttime hours concerning this specific operational order. Basically, this order involves conducting frequent motorized patrols, carrying out coordinated operations, and systematic checks of vehicles, suspicious persons, as well as properties for purely preventive and crime-fighting purposes," he added.

Mr. Andreou further mentioned that an investigation is currently underway to ascertain how the classified document regarding this specific operational order was leaked.

When asked whether an increase in security measures is anticipated, at a time when many countries are raising vigilance levels under the shadow of a terrorist attack, Mr. Andreou stated that they do not make any public statements on security matters.
