The Police has joined a new pan-European road safety campaign aimed at tackling driver distraction, with enforcement checks taking place across the island from October 5 to 11.
The “Focus on the Road” campaign is organised by Roadpol, the European Roads Policing Network, and seeks to remind drivers that even a brief lapse in concentration can have serious consequences.
Mobile phone use is a particular focus. Looking at a screen, reading a message, checking a notification or carrying out another activity while driving can take a driver’s attention away from the road at a critical moment.
The Cyprus Police is urging motorists to put their phones aside and give their full attention to driving.
Alcohol remains a major road safety issue
Police figures also show that distracted driving is only one of the risks facing motorists in Cyprus.
Between January 1 and June 30, 2026, police recorded 4,095 reports for driving under the influence of alcohol. The figure includes both out-of-court reports and cases referred to the courts.
Drug testing also resulted in 921 drivers testing positive in preliminary tests during the same six-month period. A further 60 drivers refused to provide a sample.
The figures come as Traffic Police step up checks for offences associated with serious and fatal road collisions.
Police appeal to drivers
Through the campaign, motorists are being urged to remove potential distractions before setting off and remain focused throughout their journey.
Police are particularly stressing the importance of keeping mobile phones out of use while driving, pointing out that what may seem like a momentary glance can cost a driver valuable reaction time.
The Focus on the Road campaign runs until October 11 across Cyprus, with the Police stressing that safer roads depend heavily on responsible driving behaviour.
