Post-carnival blues with dusty skies and feisty winds

Cyprus wakes up from the festive weekend with cloudy spells, strong gusts, and a sprinkle of spring on the horizon.

Newsroom

After a whirlwind weekend of Carnival celebrations in Limassol — the island’s biggest and liveliest party — and Green Monday picnics yesterday, let's face it — we're all a little tired today. Whether you're still shaking off the glitter or gearing up for Lent with a fast, the weather seems to be in the same post-party mood — a little unsettled, with a touch of dust in the air.

A weak low-pressure system is hanging over the region, bringing cloudy spells and isolated showers, mainly in the west and the mountains. The northeasterly winds will be making their presence known, blowing at strong to very strong levels — so hold onto your hats if you're venturing out.

Temperatures today will reach around 18°C inland and along the coast, while the higher mountains will stay chilly at 9°C. The sea will be rough, especially on the north and east coasts — not exactly the weather for a dip, unless you're really committed to that post-Carnival cleanse.

Tonight, skies will clear up a bit, but those pesky high clouds will still linger. Winds will pick up again, especially along the coast, with gusts up to 7 Beaufort in some areas. Temperatures will dip to 9°C inland and 3°C in the mountains — so if you're heading up for a breath of fresh air, bundle up.

Looking ahead, Wednesday will bring more cloudy intervals, but by Thursday and Friday, the sun will return — just in time to lift our spirits as we ease into Lent. Temperatures will stay steady tomorrow, with a gradual rise heading into the weekend.

Dust levels will come and go, so those with allergies — you’ve been warned.

Take it easy, Cyprus — we've earned a little rest after the weekend's festivities!
