President promises continued efforts for Cyprus peace as UAE summit approaches

Christodoulides seeks tripartite meeting with UN Chief at upcoming general assembly

Newsroom

Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides will meet with UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday to discuss the Cyprus issue, the Eastern Mediterranean situation, and bilateral relations. The leaders will also explore potential cooperation in energy, economy, and investments. Christodoulides, who is scheduled to return to Cyprus on September 12, is accompanied by Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis, Deputy Minister of European Affairs Marilena Raouna, and Diplomatic Office Director Doros Venezis.

During a recent event hosted by the Association of Unaccompanied Children in Greece 1974-1979, Christodoulides reaffirmed his commitment to resuming peace talks to address the Cyprus problem. He emphasized the need for consistent efforts and political will, citing recent measures and diplomatic engagements as evidence of his dedication. Christodoulides also expressed readiness for a tripartite meeting with the UN Secretary-General and the Turkish Cypriot leader during the UN General Assembly in New York. He highlighted Greece's role as a key ally and acknowledged the challenges faced by children affected by the 1974 Turkish invasion, many of whom found refuge in Greece.

Cyprus has remained divided since the Turkish invasion in 1974, with numerous UN-mediated peace talks failing to achieve reunification.
