Scammers send fake Tax Department emails in refund scheme

Officials warn of phishing attempt targeting personal and banking information

Newsroom

Scammers are sending fraudulent emails claiming to be from the Cyprus Tax Department in an attempt to steal personal and banking information, officials warned.

The unsolicited messages feature the department’s logo and ask recipients to verify personal details and bank account information under the pretense of processing a tax refund, the Tax Department said in a statement.

Officials urged the public to ignore such emails, warning that the intent is to gain access to bank accounts by deceiving unsuspecting users.

The department emphasized that all tax refunds are issued only via bank transfer to an account whose IBAN is securely provided by the taxpayer.

The Tax Department also said that any legitimate emails are sent exclusively from addresses ending in @tax.mof.gov.cy.
