While Spanish fans celebrated their victory, pub owners across Cyprus celebrated their own win too, as venues were packed with anxious football fans, awaiting the outcome of the match.
After 104 games, 3 host countries, and over 5 weeks of matches, the 2026 Men's World Cup has come to an end, and Spain has lifted the trophy. The Spanish team proved themselves worthy of the title with their incredible teamwork, composure, and controlled possession.
Last night, the Spanish team was able to secure their second World Cup title after defeating the defending champions, Argentina, 1-0. It was an intense match that remained goalless for the first 90 minutes until substitute Ferran Torres scored in the 106th minute, the goal which earned them their deserving title.
It was a challenging game for both sides. The Spanish team was able to enjoy a larger possession of the ball and better scoring opportunities, having 12 shots on target, including Torres’ goal, while Messi’s team struggled to create a single chance of scoring. Spain’s incredible defense held firm, which was a factor leading to their victory.
During the entire tournament, Spain’s defense was one of the strongest ever seen in the World Cups’ history. After facing strong opponents such as Portugal, France and Austria, they conceded just one goal during the quarter-final from Belgium, underlining their discipline and incredible teamwork that allowed them to eventually become world champions.
Earlier in the tournament, during the semi-finals, Spain booked their place in the final with their victory over France, 2-0, and Argentina defeated England with a score of 2-1.
Another impressive match was the one for third place between France and England. After losing their chances to gain the title as world champions, the two teams found themselves in the battle for third place, with the match ending 4-6 and the bronze medal being given to the English team. France, having entered the tournament as one of the World Cup fan favorites, returned home without a medal but with Mbappe’s new title as men’s World Cup all-time scorer and his second golden boot.
Yet, as the celebrations continue, we all mourn the loss and mark the end of an era as we say goodbye to several football legends who have announced their retirement from international football. Football fans will always remember the leadership, teamwork, and contributions that they have made to the game while inspiring millions of people and have made a lasting impression on the future generation of football players.
I will now be accepting recommendations of what we should all do until the next World Cup.
