Most people eagerly wait for the summer so that they can enjoy the warm weather and spend more time outside. However, humans are not the only ones that become more active during this season.
During Cyprus’ hot, dry summers snakes become highly active for hunting and mating, leading to an increase of snake sightings in lakes, ponds, and even residential gardens.
Yiannis Angeli experienced this firsthand. In a video he shared, he explains that he was “in a beautiful place in the mountains, where we came to see a bit of nature and relax” but instead encountered an unexpected scene.
Pointing towards the nearby pond, Angeli jokingly remarks, "We have a nice view," pointing towards the 4 snakes that were hiding in front of him.
He also took the opportunity to warn viewers that snakes are “excellent swimmers. They enter the water to lie in, wait for, and prey on birds and to soften their old skin, which helps them shed it properly." Moreover, he added that the snakes “are not even visible," highlighting how difficult it is to spot them.
As snake activity is currently at its peak, it is important that during walks near lakes and ponds all over Cyprus, you be extra cautious in order to prevent direct contact.
