Thursday forecast: Erminio’s morning hangover

Erminio was the noisy guest who overstayed his welcome last night, but he’s finally heading for the exit.

Newsroom

After a night of Erminio’s dramatic thunder and elevated dust levels, you might be waking up to a car that looks like it was dipped in a desert milkshake. The storm system that dominated our April 1st holiday is currently in its final act. The morning starts out cloudy with some lingering rain and thunderstorms, but don’t let the grey start bring you down. A significant improvement is scheduled for midday.

By this afternoon, the heavy drama will be replaced by just a few isolated showers, mostly drifting over the eastern part of the island. Temperatures are rebounding nicely, hitting 21°C inland and along the west and north coasts, while the south and east coasts get a slightly toastier 22°C. If you’re heading to the mountains, it’s a cool 14°C, and with the snow at Chionistra down to its final layers, the spring transition is nearly complete. We’re holding at seasonal averages through Friday, but expect a slight cooling trend by Saturday that will stay with us through Sunday.

The wind is also shifting gears. We’re moving away from those southeasterly gusts and into a more standard southwest-to-northwest flow. Expect a moderate 4 Beaufort breeze, though it might still reach a strong 5 Beaufort along the coast for a few hours before settling down.

Tonight, things quiet down, with only a few rogue showers expected in the west and north. But keep your plans flexible as we head into the next few days.

Friday: A mostly decent day with a side of afternoon clouds. You might see a stray shower or thunderstorm once the midday sun starts heating things up.

Saturday: A bit more patchy. Expect showers and thunderstorms to pop up in the west and northwest during the morning, before shifting toward the mountains and the eastern half of the island after lunch.

Sunday: The atmosphere is planning another mostly cloudy day with local showers and isolated thunderstorms.

Today is the turnaround day. Once the morning rain clears out, you’ve got a solid window to enjoy the fresh, post-storm air. Just maybe wait until tomorrow to wash that "Erminio dust" off the car. Sunday’s forecast suggests it might just get wet again anyway.
