Traffic lights coming to Latsia-Geri roundabout

Changes prompted by JUMBO store opening aim to improve traffic flow near Nicosia General Hospital.

New traffic lights will soon be set up at the Latsion-Geriou roundabout, located near Nicosia General Hospital, according to a report by Mario Christofi. This change is in response to increased traffic expected from the opening of the JUMBO store and new businesses in the area.

Alexis Avgousti, an engineer with the Traffic Studies and Road Safety Branch, told "K" that a traffic study showed there could be congestion during busy times. To help ease this, an extra lane has been added leading to JUMBO, and the current lanes have been widened to accommodate more vehicles.

The new traffic lights won’t be operational all day; they will only work during certain hours, including Saturday afternoons. Sensors have been installed to keep track of traffic flow on all four sides of the roundabout, which will help the lights adjust automatically based on how busy it is.

When asked if the lights will solve the traffic problems, Avgusti said, “Based on our study, we think the lights will improve traffic flow, especially during peak hours when the store is busy.” He also mentioned that JUMBO is covering all the costs for the improvements, and his team is ensuring the work is done properly.

As for whether similar traffic lights will be installed in other parts of Cyprus, Avgusti said they are looking into the possibility of adding them in commercial areas along the Limassol bypass.
