Wizz Air wins the World Finance most sustainable low-cost airline award for the fifth consecutive year

Recognition comes amid industry-wide push for net-zero transformation

Press Release

Wizz Air has once again been named the ''Most Sustainable Low-Cost Airline'' by the World Finance Sustainability Awards in 2025. This marks the airline’s fifth consecutive win, cementing its role as a leader in aviation as the industry accelerates efforts to improve environmental performance.

The World Finance judging panel, supported by AI-driven research capabilities, identified Wizz Air as the 2025 winner for its global sustainability leadership, including active participation in the Alliance for Zero Emission Aviation (AZEA), and for advocating transformative climate policies at major events such as COP29.

Wizz Air continues to operate with the lowest carbon emissions per passenger kilometre: in financial year 2024 , it recorded an average of just 52 grams of CO₂ per passenger kilometre—well below industry averages —thanks to a strong fleet renewal strategy and operational excellence. Over 61% of the fleet consisted of the highly-efficient Airbus A321neo aircraft, delivering 20% lower fuel burn and 50% less noise compared to previous models. With an average fleet age of just 4.7 years, Wizz Air operates one of the youngest fleets globally.

Yvonne Moynihan, Corporate and ESG Officer at Wizz Air, said: “We are honoured to have received this prestigious recognition for the fifth year in a row. Wizz Air’s approach to sustainability is built into every aspect of our operations, from advanced fuel efficiency to our investment in future-facing technologies. As articulated in our recently launched Net Zero Roadmap (flying towards net zero), We believe the path to net-zero in aviation depends on collaborative innovation—across policymakers, fuel producers, and the aviation ecosystem as a whole.”

The airline's growing investment in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) was another key differentiator.. Wizz Air adopted an aspiration to power its flights by at least 10% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2030—according to current EU mandates—and is forming equity partnerships with SAF developers to scale long-term production.

Additional points were awarded for operational innovations, including the use of lighter aircraft components, smart fuel management systems, and procedures like single-engine taxiing and the use of electric ground power, which together contribute to meaningful fuel savings.
