Several widely used online platforms experienced disruptions today after a reported outage at Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing division of Amazon.
Users took to social media and monitoring site Downdetector to report problems with platforms including Robinhood, Snapchat, Perplexity, Amazon.com, Prime Video, Alexa, and PayPal’s Venmo.
Perplexity’s CEO confirmed that issues with AWS were the root cause of the service interruptions. Reports indicate that some users were unable to access these platforms for several hours, though service is slowly being restored.
This incident highlights how dependent many popular apps and websites are on cloud infrastructure. Amazon Web Services hosts a wide range of applications, and outages can ripple across multiple platforms simultaneously.
Authorities at Amazon have not issued a formal statement yet, but engineers are reportedly working to resolve the technical problems.
