China’s BYD rolls into Cyprus with big EV plans

Electric carmaker opens first showroom in Nicosia on May 29

Newsroom

Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD is officially driving into the Cypriot market, and it’s coming in full throttle.

Backed by the Sfakianakis Group, BYD, short for "Build Your Dreams", is launching operations in Cyprus with the goal of capturing the attention of local car buyers and changing how people think about electric driving.

These cars may be made in China, but they’re a far cry from the “Made in China” stereotype. Think affordable luxury.

The company will open two showrooms, one in Nicosia and another in Limassol, offering Cypriots a first-hand look at its latest electric cars. The Nicosia showroom is set to open on May 29, 2025, marking the brand’s official debut on the island.

Four of BYD’s most popular models will be available for the Cyprus market:

  • ATTO 3, the company’s best-selling SUV
  • Seal, a sleek and sporty model with a growing fan base
  • Sealion 7, a larger electric SUV
  • Seal U DM-i, a plug-in hybrid with added range

All four models are expected to make a strong impression, especially among those looking for modern design, strong performance, and cutting-edge tech—without breaking the bank.

Test drive on Greek soil

Ahead of the launch, BYD invited media representatives to test-drive the new models in Greece. The event took place in Glyfada, a coastal suburb of Athens, starting from a beachside restaurant and winding all the way to the Temple of Apollo in Sounio.

Over the course of a three-hour drive, journalists had the chance to get behind the wheel of each vehicle, experiencing the smooth performance and high-tech features that reflect BYD’s vision for the future of mobility.

These cars may be made in China, but they’re a far cry from the “Made in China” stereotype. Think affordable luxury. From the design to the driving experience, the quality stood out—something BYD promises will be backed up by competitive pricing when announced.

First deliveries in August

The company says it’s prepared to meet demand, with a healthy supply of vehicles already in the pipeline. First deliveries to customers in Cyprus are expected to begin in August.

To build excitement, a pre-launch event will be held on Wednesday, May 28, just a day before the official showroom opening in Nicosia.

Who is BYD?

Founded in February 1995, BYD started with just 20 employees. Fast forward nearly 30 years, and the company now employs around 700,000 people globally. It runs more than 30 industrial parks and has over 40 subsidiaries worldwide.

BYD is more than just a car company. It’s a high-tech powerhouse that works across four main industries:

  • Automobiles
  • Electronics
  • Renewable energy
  • Rail transit

Its goal? To help create a greener future through innovation and a zero-emissions ecosystem.

With its entry into Cyprus, BYD is not just bringing new cars to the road, it’s bringing a vision for a cleaner, more sustainable way to drive.
