On Tuesday the 28th of July, 2026, the energy company Eni reached the Final Investment Decision (FID) for the development of the Cronos gas field, located in Block 6 of Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
The Cronos gas was discovered in 2022, and with the FID now approved, development of the field can now move forward. Production is expected to begin in time for the Cypriot natural gas to reach the market by 2028.
Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi marks this new development as a “concrete milestone in positioning Cyprus as a European gas producer and exporter." He added that the project demonstrates an “example of international cooperation and a concrete contribution to the diversification and security of Europe’s gas supply," emphasizing its strategic importance at a time when Europe continues to seek more diverse and reliable energy sources.
It is estimated that Cronos contains approximately 3 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, which, once obtained, will be piped to Egypt. Rather than constructing an entirely new export infrastructure, the gas will be shipped to Egypt with the intention of using their already existing one before sending the gas around Europe. This approach significantly reduces development costs and strengthens the partnership between Egypt and Cyprus.
Beyond the economic benefits, this project is expected to reshape Cyprus’ role in the Eastern Mediterranean.
By becoming a natural gas producer and exporter, Cyprus will be able to improve its international standing, have a greater geopolitical influence, and play a more prominent role in Europe’s energy security.
Domestically, the project will create new employment opportunities across sectors while supporting long-term economic growth.
