Cyprus joins EU’s new AI hub network

EU rolls out new ''AI Factories'' to help countries like Cyprus tap into powerful supercomputers and speed up innovation.

Cyprus is officially getting its own Artificial Intelligence Center as part of a new European Commission initiative to boost the bloc’s AI power and make high-tech tools more accessible to everyone, from researchers to small startups.

The Commission announced the creation of so-called “AI Factories Antennas” in seven EU countries, including Belgium, Cyprus, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Malta, and Slovakia. Several partner countries, such as the UK, Iceland, Switzerland, Moldova, Serbia, and North Macedonia, are also joining the effort.

These new centers will connect directly to Europe’s existing network of AI factories, giving each participating country secure access to state-of-the-art supercomputers built for artificial intelligence. In plain terms, they’ll be like regional “AI power stations,” helping local innovators tap into serious computing power without having to build it themselves.

The goal, according to the Commission, is to make AI resources more accessible across Europe and to close the technology gap between large and smaller countries. The centers are part of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, Europe’s massive supercomputing program that already manages some of the world’s fastest machines.

Just last week, the Commission announced a major expansion of its AI network, now counting 19 factories in 16 EU countries. And over the weekend, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced new hubs in Serbia and North Macedonia, giving more businesses access to European AI infrastructure.

The plan falls under the EU’s wider “AI Continent” strategy, which aims to make Europe a key player in the global artificial intelligence race, not just a spectator.

In short, Brussels wants to make sure the next generation of AI breakthroughs can happen right here in Europe, and now, Cyprus is plugged into that future.
