Authorities have issued €35,000 in fines for 74 violations of legislation targeting unfair commercial practices in the agricultural supply chain since the law came into force in 2022, the Ministry of Agriculture announced Monday.
Director General Andreas Grigoriou shared the figures during a Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture session, noting that 221 inspections have been carried out to date. He confirmed the ministry’s intention to intensify enforcement efforts moving forward.
DISY MP Giorgos Karoullas raised concerns over misleading labeling practices, alleging that imported products are often packaged as Cypriot goods. He cited instances in supermarkets where items labeled with a specific country of origin were also marked as local products.
Karoullas called for stricter penalties and more rigorous inspections to protect local farmers and ensure consumer transparency. He also emphasized the need for better quality control on imported goods, particularly fertilizers, at the point of entry.
Lawmakers expect the Ministry to propose legislative amendments aimed at bolstering enforcement and deterring violations.
