How Cyprus became the secret hub of the global porn industry

Tax breaks, legal protections, and strategic location make the island home to one of the world's biggest adult content companies.

When people think of Cyprus, they picture sunny beaches, rich history, and perhaps a financial hub. But what few realize is that the island is also home to some of the world's biggest players in the adult content industry. One of the most notable is Aylo, formerly known as MindGeek, the company behind giants like Pornhub, YouPorn, and Brazzers.

According to Must's Riana Stylianou, Cyprus isn’t just a random choice—it’s a calculated business move. The island offers a mix of tax incentives, legal protections, and a strategic location that makes it ideal for international tech companies.

- Low Corporate Taxes: At 12.5%, Cyprus has one of the lowest corporate tax rates in the EU, making it an attractive destination for high-revenue companies like Aylo.
- EU Legal Framework: Operating from an EU country provides a level of legal credibility and stability that companies in this industry need, especially when it comes to intellectual property rights and data protection.
- Geographic Positioning: Sitting at the crossroads of Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, Cyprus serves as a convenient base for international operations.

With around 250 employees, Aylo’s Cyprus office employs a mix of international staff, with Cypriots making up the majority. According to former employees, the company offers competitive salaries, annual raises based on performance, and a range of benefits, including:

- Health & Life Insurance: Employees get coverage through a partnership with Bupa, ensuring access to top-tier medical care.
- Vision Care Perks: The company covers up to €150 per year for eye check-ups.
- Hybrid Work Model: Most employees can choose between working from home or the office—except those who review content, as their job requires physical presence.
- Recreational Benefits: While free breakfast was recently cut, employees still enjoy perks like a gaming lounge with foosball and PlayStation.

While Cyprus may not be known for tech innovation, its business-friendly policies have turned it into an unexpected hub for global internet companies, including those in controversial industries. For Aylo, the island offers the perfect blend of tax benefits, legal security, and a location that allows it to operate on a worldwide scale—all while keeping a low profile.
