Nicosia girls’ school building to become University of Cyprus archaeology hub

Long-delayed deal breathes new life into Nicosia’s old town, with renovations and relocations set for early next year.

Newsroom

After years of back-and-forth, a deal has finally been struck over the historic girls’ school in Faneromeni. The building will now be handed over to the University of Cyprus, which plans to house its Department of History and Archaeology along with the university’s Archaeology unit.

The move follows multiple stalled negotiations. The university’s latest proposal to transfer the department was accepted, and renovations, including anti-seismic upgrades, are set to begin soon, aiming for a move early in the new year.

Observers say the development is expected to breathe new life into the historic center of Nicosia, complementing the opening of the Kapodistrian University in the old town. Originally, the building was earmarked for the School of Architecture or a branch of the Kapodistrian Foundation, but intervention by Archbishop George ultimately paved the way for the University of Cyprus to take over.
