Development projects worth €100 million are set to begin next year in the Municipality of Polis Chrysochous, Mayor Giotis Papachristofi said.

In an interview with CNA, Papachristofi said the projects include the expansion of Latchi harbor, construction of a sewerage system, upgrades to the town centers of Polis Chrysochous and Prodromi, improvements at archaeological sites and work on the municipal amphitheater.

“All of the projects will start in 2026, although some may begin toward the end of this year,” he said. “The intensive preparation and work we carried out in previous years made this possible.”

Papachristofi said that, along with regionally significant projects already underway, the new works will place Polis Chrysochous at the forefront of development on the island in the coming decades.

He noted that the municipality is also planning projects for the town and its 13 municipal districts.

“The area, with its unique natural beauty, did not receive the level of development it deserved in past years,” he said.

He added that public works, combined with private investment, are expected to create jobs, support agriculture and livestock farming, and help reverse the trend of young people leaving the area.

Polis Chrysochous saw a large number of visitors this year, Papachristofi said, but the picture is expected to change significantly in 2026 with the opening of a major hotel complex in Latchi.

Smaller projects worth about €700,000, in cooperation with the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, are also planned across various municipal districts and are expected to be completed this year.

“Our goal is for the Polis Chrysochous district to present a proper image, with quality infrastructure that will attract visitors and strengthen tourism,” Papachristofi said. “That is the only way to create jobs and foster tourism development. At the same time, agriculture and livestock farming will also benefit, since producers will be able to sell their products. This way, all sectors will be supported.
