Accountant General of the Republic of Cyprus Andreas Antoniades told CNA that approximately 1.2 million euro had been donated by the 30th of July in the bank account opened by the government at the Central Bank of Cyprus to collect donations for the victims of the Limassol wildfire.
“Some donations are over 100,000 euro,” Antoniades said.
He added that “raising a large sum is not an end in itself", noting that “we are satisfying the need and demand of the public to offer money to the state so that it goes to a good cause.”
The Accountant General said that the purpose of the donations will not be to cover state projects, but it will be a “separate one and will certainly be related to the tragedy and the fire victims.”
He added that the Council of Ministers will decide for what purpose the donations will be used.
