Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Limassol on Thursday evening to demand accountability for last week’s deadly wildfire in the mountain region that killed two people.
The protest, organized by 22-year-old student Sofia Perikleous through social media, began at the Heroes’ Theater of Christos and Miltos Christoforou. Participants observed a minute of silence for the victims, Dimitris Filippidis and his wife, Maro Filippidi, before a program of speeches and Cypriot songs.
Perikleous said the rally aimed to express public outrage over what she called decades of government negligence in protecting both residents and the environment. She stressed that the protest was not affiliated with any political parties or organizations.
Carrying banners and placards, the crowd marched along the coastal park and gathered at the old port, chanting slogans. The march followed an initial assembly in the Molos area near the A parking lot.
The deadly blaze, which scorched the Limassol mountain region last Wednesday, has intensified public anger over wildfire preparedness and prevention efforts across Cyprus.
