A handshake at the entrance of the Presidential Palace marked the start of Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s working visit to Cyprus on Thursday, at a time when events across the region are being felt increasingly close to home.
Herzog arrived at the palace at 11:30 a.m., where President Nikos Christodoulides was waiting to welcome him. The two leaders posed briefly for photographs before heading inside for private talks.
Their meeting is now underway and will be followed by a working lunch.
Although no detailed agenda had been released at the time of writing, the talks are expected to focus on relations between Cyprus and Israel as well as the rapidly changing security situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and the wider Middle East.
Herzog’s visit comes at the invitation of Christodoulides and is aimed at further strengthening cooperation between the two countries.
For Cyprus, the meeting is about considerably more than diplomatic handshakes.
Israel is one of the island’s closest regional partners, with cooperation covering security, defence, energy, tourism and emergency planning. Those ties carry even greater weight at a time when the continuing war in the Middle East is disrupting flights, pushing fuel prices higher and raising concerns about instability spreading across the region.
Cyprus’ location places it close enough to feel the consequences of any escalation, but also gives it a role as a bridge between Europe and the Middle East. The island has previously been used as a hub for evacuations and humanitarian operations during regional crises.
That makes Thursday’s private conversation particularly significant. Any discussion about security, energy routes or emergency cooperation could eventually have practical consequences for people in Cyprus, from the cost of filling a car to the availability of flights and the island’s readiness if another regional evacuation becomes necessary.
The visit also takes place as Cyprus, Greece and Israel continue to deepen their strategic relationship in the Eastern Mediterranean, while tensions between Israel and Turkey add another layer of political sensitivity.
