Cyprus and Israel have taken another step in developing cooperation on civil protection and emergency management, with the signing of a joint work plan covering 2026 and 2027.
The agreement followed a visit to Cyprus by a three-member delegation from Israel's National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA), led by its head, Brigadier General (Res.) Itzik Bar.
According to Cyprus Civil Defence, the Israeli delegation held meetings with the Ministers of Interior and Defence and representatives of government ministries, services and other authorities involved in emergency response.
During their visit, the officials were given an overview of Cyprus' emergency management infrastructure and operations. They visited coordination centres as well as operational and training facilities, receiving briefings on civil protection procedures, crisis management, search and rescue operations, natural hazard monitoring and aerial firefighting capabilities.
Discussions concentrated on increasing cooperation through the sharing of knowledge and professional experience, joint training and the identification of practical projects that could be developed by the two countries.
Officials also continued work towards a Memorandum of Understanding intended to provide a more formal basis for future cooperation in emergency preparedness and response.
The newly signed 2026-27 work plan sets out the actions to be pursued over the next two years as Cyprus and Israel seek to improve coordination and preparedness for natural disasters and other emergency situations.
