The Cabinet has approved a series of new appointments to the governing boards of several public institutions, including the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC), the Central Bank of Cyprus, the Youth Board of Cyprus and the National Cancer Institute.
The decisions were taken during Thursday’s Cabinet meeting, chaired by President Nikos Christodoulides.
At CySEC, Georgios Karatzias has been appointed chairman for a five-year term, with Loukas Lagoudis serving as vice chairman for the same period. Andrea Mounti Savvides has also been appointed as a board member for five years.
Panikos Vakkou has been appointed as an executive member of the Board of Directors of the Central Bank of Cyprus.
The Cabinet also approved the new leadership of the Youth Board of Cyprus (ONEK). Pambos Christodoulou will serve as chairman, while Thanos Christodoulou has been appointed vice chairman. The board will also include Zafiro Kastanou, Stavros Sotiriou and Iakovos Iakovou. Alexandros Gerolatsiitis and Fotis Trimbakkiros will remain on the board as incumbent members.
Lefteris Antoniou has been appointed chairman of the Pancyprian Refugee Union, while Marilena Evangelou will take over as chairwoman of the School for the Deaf.
First board appointed for National Cancer Institute
The Cabinet has also appointed the first governing board of the National Cancer Institute, bringing together representatives from the health and finance ministries, the medical profession, academia and patient organisations.
The board will be chaired by oncologist Dr Pavlos Dragkos.
Its members include Dr Elena Panagiotopoulou, representing the Ministry of Health, and Anna Demetriou, a statistical officer at the ministry’s Health Monitoring Unit. Elena Zachariadou will represent the Ministry of Finance.
The medical profession will be represented by oncologist Dr Pantelis Kountourakis and haematologist Dr Marios Antoniades, both representing the Pancyprian Medical Association.
Antonis Tryfonos has been appointed as the representative of the Cyprus Federation of Cancer Patients and Friends.
Academia will be represented by Associate Professor Eleni (Lina) Tolma, representing the Conference of Rectors, while Professor Konstantinos N. Fellas will represent the Cyprus National Bioethics Committee.
A further appointment was made to the Cyprus Land Development Corporation, with civil engineer Panayiota Chatzigeorgiou joining its board as a member.
Marianna Gallidi, a musicologist, has also been appointed to the board of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Foundation.
The appointments cover a range of financial, public, social, health and cultural institutions and follow decisions taken by the Cabinet at its September 10 meeting.
