Authorities have confirmed the identities of an elderly couple who died in last week’s wildfire in the Limassol mountains after their car was trapped by flames on the Monagri–Alassa road.
Autopsy results identified the victims as Maro Avraam Filippidou, 77, and her husband, Dimitris Filippidis Pastou, 81, both former residents of Limassol. They were found burned inside their vehicle on July 23 as residents evacuated nearby villages.
Civil Defense teams discovered the car shortly after 9 p.m. and recovered the bodies, later sending samples for DNA testing. The deaths were caused by burns, according to forensic reports.
Community leaders said the couple ignored warnings to use a safer evacuation route. Silikou community head Nikos Aresti said residents were told to leave via the Agios Mamas road, but the couple took the Monagri road, where the fire spread rapidly. He criticized police for not closing the dangerous route.
The Gypsou Community Council mourned the couple, describing them as longtime residents with roots in Morphou. The Limassol CID continues to investigate the circumstances of the deaths.
