A healthy baby girl has been born in Athens from an embryo frozen more than 22 years ago, in a remarkable medical case shaped by both scientific achievement and profound family loss.
The baby, weighing 3.49 kilograms, was born to 54-year-old Christina Rapti-Tzelepi. The embryo had been cryopreserved on March 17, 2004, and transferred to her uterus on Dec. 23, 2025.
According to the medical team, 22 years, five months and 23 days passed between the freezing of the embryo and the child’s birth.
The doctors believe this is the longest period documented in international medical literature involving a woman’s own cryopreserved genetic material that resulted in a successful birth. They said previously published cases involved embryos stored for 18 years and three months in Japan and 17 years in Israel.
The claim has not yet been independently confirmed through scientific publication. The team is compiling the clinical and laboratory findings and plans to submit the case to an international medical journal.
A decision born from tragedy
Behind the medical milestone is an intensely personal story.
In 2004, Rapti-Tzelepi became pregnant through fertility treatment and gave birth to a son following her first embryo transfer. The remaining embryos were kept frozen.
In October 2025, the family’s 21-year-old son was killed in a road accident.
While living through that devastating loss, Rapti-Tzelepi decided to use one of the embryos that had remained in storage since her original treatment.
Time was extremely limited. At 54, she had to complete the required medical procedures and obtain permission from Greece’s National Authority of Assisted Reproduction before reaching the legal age limit.
Her gynecologist, Konstantinos Pantos, who also serves as general secretary of the Hellenic Society of Reproductive Medicine, described the birth as an important clinical and scientific development.
He also said medicine must find a way to combine rules and patient safety with humanity, particularly in exceptional cases involving deep personal circumstances.
For the family, however, the importance of the birth cannot be measured only in years, medical records or laboratory data.
The parents are clear that their baby girl does not replace the son they lost. No child could.
But after a period of unimaginable grief, they say her arrival has brought “hope and light” back into their home, a new life beginning from an embryo preserved more than two decades earlier.
