Authorities in occupied northern Cyprus detained a 24-year-old man after four embryos were discovered in his luggage at the illegal airport in Tymbou.
According to Turkish Cypriot media outlet Kibris Postasi, the man had been preparing to travel abroad when airport officials found the embryos during a baggage inspection. He was arrested on accusations linked to violations of regulations governing the transfer of human cells, tissues, and organs.
The case was presented before the so-called district court in occupied Nicosia, where a judge approved a two-day detention order while investigators continue inquiries.
Court proceedings revealed that the embryos were stored in four separate tubes placed inside a specialized container marked “Life Pack” and carrying a reference number. Investigators stated that the embryos had come from an IVF clinic operating in occupied Nicosia without permission from the relevant authorities. The material was confiscated and entered into evidence.
Police handling the investigation also told the court that the suspect had provided a statement voluntarily.
