A major search-and-rescue operation is underway in Konnos Bay after violent weather battered several boats anchored off Cape Greco, destroying at least two of them.
At least two people have been rescued from the sea, while several others were reportedly brought to safety from another vessel caught in the dangerous conditions.
Some people remain unaccounted for following the sinking and destruction of the boats, although the exact number of missing has not yet been confirmed.
Helicopters have been deployed to the area, while ambulances and emergency crews are standing by on shore as the operation continues. People are still being rescued, according to information from the scene.
Several of the boats are understood to anchor in Konnos Bay each year. However, the unusually powerful winds and rough seas reportedly tore vessels from their moorings, causing some to sink or break apart.
Video footage from the area shows boats being overwhelmed by the waves and breaking up in the sea.
