Newsroom

A waterspout was spotted in the sea off Larnaca shortly after 11am on Saturday, with the phenomenon also visible from the coastal villages of Meneou and Pervolia.

The sighting came as intense weather conditions began affecting various parts of Cyprus, with massive thunderstorms and high winds reported across the island. Further deterioration in the weather is expected over the coming hours.

An orange weather warning issued by the Department of Meteorology came into effect at 10am on Saturday and is due to remain in force until 7pm.

According to the warning, strong thunderstorms are expected to affect parts of the island, with rainfall intensity potentially reaching 55 to 70 millimetres per hour. Hail is also expected, while winds within thunderstorms may change direction and strengthen temporarily, with stronger gusts possible.

The waterspout off Larnaca was among the striking weather phenomena seen as the conditions developed.

A waterspout is a rotating column of air that forms over water. When the circulation is associated with a thunderstorm and is essentially a tornado occurring over the sea, it is known as a tornadic waterspout.

The striking formation was captured on video off the Larnaca coast.
