Approximately 5,000 passengers travelling to or from Cyprus were affected on Tuesday after a failure in Britain’s air traffic control system caused widespread disruption at airports across the United Kingdom.
A total of 30 flights to and from Cyprus were affected by the problems on Tuesday, according to Hermes Airports. Sixteen of the disrupted services involved Larnaca Airport, while a further 14 were scheduled to arrive at or depart from Pafos Airport.
The disruption continued to affect some Cyprus services on Wednesday. At least two flights arriving at and departing from London Heathrow were listed as cancelled at Larnaca Airport, while the full extent of further delays and cancellations remained unclear.
Some flights cancelled on Tuesday were rescheduled for Wednesday, although airport officials said it was too early to determine how many additional services could be affected.
Flights from British airports had resumed by Wednesday morning, but airports warned that it would take time for operations to return to normal after the disruption forced some aircraft to land at different locations.
The air traffic control failure caused significant disruption throughout the UK on Tuesday, with more than 400 flights cancelled and around 600 others delayed. London Heathrow alone reported 100 cancellations and 367 delayed flights.
