Starting Nov. 1, employers in Cyprus will have to pay a minimum amount to cover their employees’ home office costs, like internet, electricity, and equipment. The rule will apply to both private companies and public sector workers, where teleworking has been allowed since 2023.
Officials said teleworking will stay voluntary, employees won’t be forced to work from home, and their main workspace should be at home. Other locations, such as cafés, coworking spaces, or offices outside the company, are allowed only if they meet safety, health, and security rules. Supervisors will also decide how to adjust schedules for staff on long leave.
The Ministry of Labor will also increase inspections to make sure companies follow the rules.
Supporters say teleworking can make staff more productive and flexible, but lawmakers and unions say clear rules, good tech support, and cybersecurity protections are needed to make the system work smoothly for everyone.
