A wine crafted from a rare Cypriot indigenous grape variety, produced by the boutique Makarounas Winery in Letymbou, Paphos, has achieved a significant distinction: it has been included in the Financial Times’ list of 51 “Best White Wines for Christmas.”
Jancis Robinson’s Influential Wine Recommendations
The list was curated by Master of Wine Jancis Robinson, a renowned wine critic who has been writing about wine since 1975 and has maintained a wine column in the Financial Times since 1989. Her selections are highly regarded and span a range of options, from supermarket shelves to premium wineries.
Robinson’s annual Christmas wine list highlights exceptional wines suited for the festive season. In her latest article, titled “The Best White Wines for Christmas,” she emphasizes that her choices are based on the wines’ quality and appeal rather than aiming for a balanced representation of countries, styles, or grape varieties.
This year’s list includes notable entries such as wines from South Africa, a Chilean Chardonnay, and some surprises from California. Robinson also addresses the inclusion of well-known brands such as Majestic, Tesco, Waitrose, and The Wine Society, pointing out that these larger operations often maintain competitive pricing due to their scale and structure while employing some of the best wine-buying teams in the industry.
