Those who traded the city lights for the Cyprus mountains on Wednesday night were rewarded with one of summer’s most memorable shows, and this one came without tickets, queues, or a stage.
The Perseid meteor shower sent bright streaks across the dark sky, giving stargazers the chance to watch dozens of so-called “shooting stars” flash overhead.
The Perseids are among the year’s best-known meteor showers. Despite their nickname, the flashes are not falling stars but tiny pieces of space debris burning up as they enter Earth’s atmosphere.
Clearer skies and less light pollution made Cyprus’ mountainous areas ideal viewing spots. SPP Media videographer Rafaellos Markitanis captured the phenomenon from Machairas, recording the brief trails of light as they appeared above the mountain landscape.
“The Perseids illuminate the night with short, bright streaks, as if the stars themselves were writing a fairy tale in the sky,” Markitanis wrote on Instagram.
For those who missed the peak, the Perseids will remain active for several more days, although fewer meteors are likely to be visible. The best advice remains simple: Find a dark spot, put the phone down for a moment, and look up.
