$500 billion AI project aims to transform the U.S., but sparks rivalries

Trump-backed initiative promises a tech revolution, but public spats among billionaires reveal tension behind the scenes.

President Donald Trump and leading tech executives have announced an ambitious $500 billion project, dubbed "Stargate," aimed at expanding AI data centers across the United States. The initiative, led by SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle, and MGX, is intended to supercharge the development of cutting-edge AI systems, keeping the U.S. ahead in the global race for artificial intelligence dominance. SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son described the project as a catalyst for America’s “golden age” of AI, while Oracle’s Larry Ellison emphasized its potential to revolutionize industries, such as medicine, with promises like custom cancer vaccines.

Despite the grand vision, the announcement quickly sparked division in the tech world. Elon Musk, who was noticeably absent from the event, dismissed the plan on social media, questioning its financial legitimacy. Musk’s criticisms, which included jabs at OpenAI’s Sam Altman, escalated into a public spat. The two are longtime rivals in the high-stakes AI race, each vying to create the most advanced systems that could approach artificial general intelligence (AGI)—machines that rival human intelligence across tasks.

The Stargate project aligns with Trump’s broader push to enhance American tech capabilities, especially in competition with China. Analysts say the massive investment is part of a geopolitical strategy to secure the U.S.’s technological edge. However, some experts remain skeptical, noting that Stargate focuses on infrastructure and scaling rather than fundamental AI research.

Critics also point to a lack of clear policy direction for such transformative technology. Wharton professor Ethan Mollick cautioned against pouring billions into a field where the end goal—AGI—remains vaguely defined. He added that while many tech leaders sincerely believe in AI’s transformative power, questions about its societal impact and practical applications linger.

This initiative comes at a time of heated competition in AI, with countries like China making rapid advancements and companies like Meta openly sharing their models to drive global innovation. While the Stargate project promises to be a milestone in AI development, it also highlights the challenges of balancing ambition, collaboration, and rivalry in a field that could reshape the future.
