Digital IDs launch in Cyprus: Here’s how to get yours

Applications are now open for free or subsidized eIDs—everything you need to know to apply easily.

Newsroom

Starting today, Monday (January 27), Cypriots can apply for their new digital identity cards (eIDs), bringing the country one step closer to fully embracing the digital age. Applications are made through the JCC Trust Portal, but there’s one extra step—you’ll need to book an appointment at a Citizen Service Center (CSC) to verify your identity in person. A simple video guide, with English subtitles, is also available to help you through the process.

What’s a Digital ID?

The eID is a secure, digital version of your ID that you can use to sign documents electronically or access various government services online. It’s valid for three years and can be renewed.

Who can apply? If you’re over 18, a Cypriot citizen with a biometric ID, and own a smartphone with fingerprint or face recognition, you’re good to go!

The government is encouraging everyone to apply by offering the first 30,000 eIDs for free—so act fast! After that, the next 70,000 will cost just €15 thanks to a state subsidy.

How to Apply for Your Digital ID

Here’s how you can get started:

1. Set up your account: Go to the JCC Trust Portal and create an account.
2. Download the app: Install the JCC Authenticator app from your phone’s app store.
3. Secure your account: Use the app to turn on two-factor authentication.
4. Start your application: Follow the simple steps on the JCC Trust Portal.
5. Submit your details: Upload photos of your biometric ID (front and back) and fill out the required information.
6. Authorize your application: Open the JCC app, log in, and enter your username.
7. Verify codes: Enter the two 6-digit codes sent to you by SMS and email.
8. Schedule your CSC appointment: Print your application and book an appointment online to visit a Citizen Service Center within 30 days. Bring your ID and printed application with you.
9. Complete your eID setup: After your CSC appointment, you’ll get an SMS and email telling you your eID is ready. Log back into the JCC Trust Portal to activate it within five days.

What Can You Use Your eID For?

The digital ID will let you sign documents electronically and handle lots of government services without the hassle of paperwork. This includes:
- Registering as self-employed or an employer.
- Applying for allowances like paternity, disability, or widows’ pensions.
- Submitting claims for redundancy, leave payments, or other benefits.

The government hopes the eID will make accessing services faster and easier while cutting down on bureaucracy.

Don’t wait—apply now, and if you get stuck, check out the helpful video guide with English subtitles. It’s time to take a step into the digital future!
