Cyprus launches ''Digital Citizen'' for easier access to services

New digital platform lets citizens store key documents like IDs and driving licenses on their phones, saving time and simplifying processes

Cyprus is making it easier for its citizens to handle official paperwork with the launch of the "Digital Citizen" program. Starting today, Cypriots can access and store important documents, such as their identity cards, driving licenses, and vehicle registration certificates, all in digital format. This shift means that paper documents are no longer necessary for many everyday tasks, streamlining procedures and saving time for everyone.

The "Digital Citizen" program is a big leap in the country's push to modernize and improve public services. The initiative aims to make it more convenient for people to get things done, whether it's at the government office or while handling personal affairs. Thanks to this program, citizens will now be able to access their important documents on their phones or computers, making tasks quicker and simpler.

The launch was announced by the President of Cyprus, who shared the news on social media, calling it a major step forward in the country's digital transformation. "We are simplifying procedures, saving time, and improving services," the President said, adding that the goal is to improve the daily lives of all Cypriots.

To use the app, citizens must first have an activated CY Login profile, which is a prerequisite for accessing government services. Additionally, the Two-Factor Authentication function must be enabled in their CY Login profile for security purposes.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to get started with the app:

1. Create and Activate CY Login Profile: If you don't already have one, register on the CY Login portal here.

2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication: Make sure the Two-Factor Authentication function is activated in your CY Login profile for added security.

3. Access the "Digital Citizen" App: Once your profile is set up and authenticated, download and log in to the app to create digital versions of your documents.

4. Verify Document Authenticity: Digital documents generated through the app can be verified using a QR code. Public services and private entities can verify the authenticity of your digital documents through the app.

While the app is available for immediate use in public services and the private sector, its mandatory use by all agencies will be rolled out gradually, with an adjustment period announced later.

The official launch will take place on December 12, 2024, with the introduction of additional tools like the Digital Assistant in the gov.cy portal.

This new digital approach is just the beginning. The government plans to add even more services to the platform, making it easier for everyone to interact with the state. With this change, Cyprus is embracing modern technology to create a more efficient, eco-friendly, and user-friendly system for its citizens.
