The Department of Environment has confirmed full compliance with environmental requirements for the start of the first phase of work at Akamas National Forest Park and announced plans to create a daily inspection and monitoring mechanism.

In a statement, the department said a comprehensive review of available data led to a report on the implementation of conditions set in the latest Special Ecological Assessment Report, issued in March 2024. The report also included specific recommendations for beginning the first phase of the project.

The conclusions were based on input from the Department of Forests and its consultant, views from other competent authorities, expertise from agencies including the Geological Survey Department and the Water Development Department, and positions expressed during an April 16, 2025, meeting of an ad hoc committee.

According to the report, “full compliance can be achieved with the relevant conditions set by the Environmental Authority, as well as with the relevant decisions of the Council of Ministers.”

The department said the project’s environmental footprint will be reduced through a phased schedule of actions developed with contributions from all relevant agencies.

To ensure strict adherence to environmental conditions, and following instructions from the minister of agriculture, rural development and environment, the department will also set up a monitoring system.

An environmental inspector will be appointed to visit the site daily and submit factual reports with photographic evidence to the environmental authority, the department said.
