Cyprus turned into an outdoor oven on Wednesday, with Lefkara clocking an eye-watering 46.1°C, just a whisker below the country’s hottest temperature ever recorded.
The reading, confirmed by KitasWeather, came within a hair of the 46.2°C record set in September 2020 at Athalassa National Forest Park.
The blistering heat wasn’t just a Lefkara problem. Inland plains, mountain and semi-mountain areas, and even southern coastal regions baked under extreme temperatures, leaving air conditioners wheezing and shade-seekers scrambling for relief.
The sweltering spike comes amid a run of punishing summer heat that has gripped the island, with experts warning the hot spell isn’t over yet.
Locals may be used to warm summers, but days like this are a stark reminder that “hot” in Cyprus can always get hotter, almost record-breaker hotter.
And though the swelter isn’t over yet, there’s light (and cooler air) at the end of the tunnel.
Thursday (Aug 14): Slight dip to 40°C, still dangerously hot under mostly sunny skies.
Friday (Aug 15): Down to 37°C, but the sun’s still in charge; hydrate and take it slow outdoors.
Saturday–Sunday (Aug 16–17): Finally, a break, with highs near 33°C, with cooler evenings around 20°C. Perfect for evening strolls and outdoor dinners.
