Apostolos Kouroupakis
September in Cyprus may still feel like summer, but the cultural calendar has clearly moved on. If you are ready for an evening that involves more than another coffee or the usual dinner reservation, this week brings exhibitions, dance, theatre, music and a new publication exploring the island itself, with plenty happening in both Nicosia and Limassol.
September 13–19
1. EXHIBITION
Urban Kaleidoscope
Gallery 45 in Limassol presents 'Urban Kaleidoscope', a multidimensional exploration of contemporary urban life.
The exhibition brings together works by 10 local and international artists, examining the dynamic relationship between art and life in the city.
Featuring artists from Cyprus, Greece, France, Luxembourg, Lebanon, Italy, Iran and the United States, the exhibition offers a wide range of cultural backgrounds and artistic approaches.
Participating artists are Alexander Charriol, Anna Mari, Donforty, Hanie Soltani, Iacovos Loizou, Nadine Chabarekh, Pooya Razi, Raya Matta, Sylvester Gauvrit and Thomas Iser.
**Until September 30. Gallery 45, 45 Agiou Andreou Street, Limassol.**
2. DANCE
4th Cyprus Choreography Showcase
The fourth Cyprus Choreography Showcase will take place in Limassol from September 18 to 20, 2026.
The showcase is an important platform for promoting contemporary choreography in Cyprus. Its aim is to present selected works to artistic directors, curators and contemporary dance festival organizers from abroad, who are invited specifically for the event. This creates opportunities for Cypriot productions to gain international exposure and tour overseas.
This year’s program features eight choreographic works exploring a broad range of themes and artistic practices, from power relations, identity, and gender to social justice, female strength, collectivity, transformation, instinct and humanity’s relationship with the future.
The program also includes the “MEANWHILE” events, organized by Nea Kinisi of Dance Groups, Dancers and Choreographers, Dance House Lemesos and Dance House Lefkosia.
**September 18–20. Rialto Theatre, 19 Andrea Drousioti Street, Heroes’ Square, Limassol. Information: 77 777745 and www.rialto.com.cy **
3. EXHIBITION
Nikos Kouroussis — Labyrinths
The Limassol Municipal Arts Centre – Papadakis Warehouses presents 'Nikos Kouroussis: Labyrinths', a retrospective devoted to the artist’s multifaceted practice and curated by Marina Christodoulidou and Christina Lambrou.
The exhibition brings together paintings, video, functional sculpture, installations, archival material, and film. It traces the images, ideas, and processes that have shaped Kouroussis’ work across different periods and artistic forms.
The title, 'Labyrinths,' is drawn from a series of works by Kouroussis and proposes the labyrinth as a form of storytelling, not through a chronological sequence, but through connections, returns and intersections.
The exhibition therefore unfolds through thematic cycles and archival traces, bringing different moments from the artist’s career into conversation with one another.
At its heart is Kouroussis’ enduring interest in sculptural forms and space, imagery and technology.
**Until October 4. Limassol Municipal Arts Centre – Papadakis Warehouses, Stathis Street cul-de-sac, Christodoulou Papadaki, Limassol. Information: apothikespapadaki@gmail.com.**

5. PERFORMANCE
The Woman of Zakynthos and Other Eternal Memories
Director and choreographer Antigoni Gyra uses 'The Woman of Zakynthos' as her starting point, weaving in excerpts from 'The Free Besieged' and 'The Poisoned Woman'.
The performance also introduces contemporary voices through the creators’ personal memories, commentary by journalist Konstantinos Poulis, and original music by rapper Anser.
Actors Aliki Avdelopoulou and Dimitris Agoras follow the rhythm of Dionysios Solomos’ language with their entire bodies. They sing, switch roles and lead the audience on a journey through poetry, memory and storytelling—both spoken and physical.
The result is a staged reading that moves beyond the page and becomes a performance in its own right. Speaking directly to the present, it sheds both humorous and sorrowful light on timeless questions of power, violence, injustice and human cruelty.
**Performances: Thursday, September 17, at 8 p.m., and Friday, September 18, at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. To Erma Café-Reading Room, 43 Ektoros Street, Nicosia. Information and tickets: www.more.com, www.nif.cy and 22 797979.**
6. MUSIC
Bridge — Christos Petrou
'Bridge – Christos Petrou' presents the artist’s first complete recording project, a song cycle that seeks to build bridges between history, poetry and cultural identity.
The album expresses the need to keep open the path connecting the present with everything that has shaped us and continues to move us.
Set to words by Greek and Cypriot poets, including Angelos Sikelianos, Costas Montis, and Vasilis Rotas, as well as lyrics by Petrou himself, the songs combine elements of Greek and Cypriot musical tradition with contemporary composition and orchestration.
Performers are Christos Petrou on vocals, Maria Petrou on vocals, Dimitris Pichas on double bass, Alexandros Koutsonasios on piano, Christos Isidorou on lavta and traditional wind instruments, and Evros Voskarides on violin.
