The sun tightens its grip: A reluctant forecast of heat, haze, and hollow promises of relief

Seasonal low pressure smothers the region as the heat soars, the sea sighs, and clouds pass by with no intention of helping.

The sky, for now, has decided to bless us with unrelenting clarity, a gift only the most sun-obsessed would call generous. The seasonal low pressure drapes itself lazily over the region, pulling along a warm air mass like a sulky child being dragged to the market.

Today, the sun will reign without mercy, burning down on us in an almost personal act of hostility. Expect moments when mid-level clouds wander across the sky, not to shield you, but merely to remind you of the shade you can’t have. Winds will drift mostly from the southwest to northwest, a gentle 3 to 4 Beaufort, the kind that stirs dust rather than cools skin. In some unlucky corners, they will blow from the northeast to southeast, light but equally uninspired. The sea will lounge in deceptive calmness, occasionally flexing into a slight restlessness, especially in the west, as if it, too, has had enough.

Temperatures will climb to around 45°C inland, the kind of heat that melts ambition, while the eastern and southern coasts will swelter at about 38°C, and the western, northern, and higher mountains will simmer at around 36°C.

Tonight, the heavens will stay mostly clear, offering no redemption except the absence of the sun. Winds will behave much as before: mostly southwest to northwest, light to occasionally moderate. The sea will remain mostly composed, though the west will keep its slight temper. Temperatures will sink only reluctantly to 27°C inland and along the coasts, and a meager 25°C in the mountains.

Thursday will see more of the same with cloudless skies and heat that clings to you like bad news. Friday, the Feast of the Dormition, will be sunny too, the heat slightly humbled but still lording over the day. Saturday dares to hint at change: clouds will gather here and there, but don’t expect them to do anything useful.

Temperatures on Thursday will barely flinch, still soaring well above seasonal norms. Friday promises a drop, especially inland and in the mountains, though the relief will be more symbolic than real. By Saturday, we may return to something resembling average, but only after the heat has had its say.
