Back to school, back to traffic and still sizzling September weather

Clear skies and temperatures climbing to 39°C inland will keep Cyprus firmly in summer mode, even as the school year gets underway.

Newsroom

A familiar September phenomenon is underway in Cyprus today: the great school run.

With the majority of children heading back to classrooms, motorists may want to take a deep breath before setting off in the morning. Roads that enjoyed a relatively peaceful summer could soon be filled with school buses, anxious parents, excited children and the occasional youngster who suddenly remembers a forgotten lunchbox.

The morning commute may therefore require a little extra patience. School drop-offs have a remarkable ability to turn even a quiet road into a slow-moving parade of cars, particularly during the first few days of the new school year.

There is, however, a silver lining for those escaping the morning rush. The cafés may be wonderfully quiet. For anyone dreaming of a peaceful coffee and a table without a queue, September may have just delivered the perfect opportunity.

The weather, meanwhile, appears determined to keep summer firmly in charge for a little longer.

Monday will be mainly clear, with temperatures reaching a sizzling 39°C inland. The west coast can expect highs of around 33°C, while other coastal areas may reach approximately 36°C. Higher mountain areas will be noticeably cooler, with temperatures near 29°C.

Winds will begin lightly from northeasterly to southeasterly directions before gradually turning southwesterly to northwesterly and strengthening slightly. The sea will remain calm to slightly rough.

The evening is expected to stay mainly clear, with light winds and calm to slightly rough seas.

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday should also bring mostly clear skies, although occasional increased cloud cover is expected. A few isolated afternoon showers in the mountains are possible on Thursday, just in case the weather decides that September needs a tiny bit of personality.

Temperatures will ease on Tuesday, although they will remain slightly above normal for the time of year, with little change expected through Wednesday and Thursday.

So, the advice for the week is simple: leave a little earlier, expect a few extra cars, keep cool and, if the traffic gets too much, remember that there may be an unusually peaceful café waiting at the end of the journey.
