Cyprus traffic police are cracking down on drivers who misuse lanes on the highways, especially on sections with three lanes, warning that fines of €65 will be issued for illegal lane use and overtaking from the left lane.
With more cars expected on the roads in the coming days, authorities say improper use of lanes is a serious safety hazard that can cause accidents. To keep everyone safer, the Traffic Police Department will step up patrols and checks on highways, focusing on common violations like cruising in the wrong lane or overtaking from the left.
Here’s the simple rule: All vehicles must keep to the left lane unless they’re overtaking. The middle and right lanes are only for passing another car or to allow vehicles entering the highway to merge smoothly. After overtaking, drivers must return to the left lane.
It’s also illegal for buses, heavy trucks, or vehicles towing trailers to drive in the far right lane. The safety lane marked by a solid line is strictly off-limits except in emergencies.
And a quick reminder, overtaking on the left lane is a no-go. Those caught breaking these rules will face a €65 fine.
Police urge drivers to follow the highway code and watch the signs carefully as traffic picks up this summer. Staying in the right lane and obeying the rules isn’t just about avoiding a ticket, it’s about keeping everyone on the road safe.
