Messages allegedly left on bullet casings in CEO's Murder

''Deny,'' ''Depose,'' ''Defend''—Words etched on the bullets left behind after the targeted killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson deepen the mystery surrounding his death.

Newsroom

The murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on a New York City sidewalk has taken a dark and cryptic twist. Investigators found that each bullet casing left at the scene bore a single word: 'deny', 'depose', and 'defend'. These inscriptions suggest the killer might have been trying to send a message, but police are still piecing together what it might mean.

The chilling attack unfolded in Midtown Manhattan, captured on surveillance footage. Thompson was walking near his hotel when a masked man wearing a hooded jacket and carrying a backpack approached from behind. The shooter fired multiple shots; at one point, his gun jammed, but he fixed it and continued firing as Thompson tried to flee. After the assault, the suspect escaped on a bike, disappearing into Central Park. Initial reports suggested a Citibike was used, but the NYPD later clarified this wasn’t the case.

Detectives are hopeful that other clues will lead them to the perpetrator. A cellphone was found in an alley near the hotel, and a cup discarded at a nearby Starbucks is being analyzed for evidence. As the investigation progresses, the mysterious words on the bullet casings remain a focal point.

UnitedHealth Group released a statement expressing shock and grief over Thompson’s death, describing him as a respected leader and friend. The company is cooperating fully with authorities and has requested privacy during this tragic time.

Meanwhile, the NYPD urges anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers to help crack the case.
