Tuesday brings clouds, breezes and the first signs of change

Temperatures are still reaching 36°C inland, but the summer spell is beginning to lose its grip.

Newsroom

Well, look at that. We made it through Monday.

Tuesday is here, and Cyprus is slowly beginning to act like it has remembered that autumn is actually a thing. Summer is still refusing to leave quietly, with temperatures reaching 36°C inland, but the skies are getting a little more interesting and the mountains are apparently preparing to put on their own weather show. So, if you were hoping for another day of wall-to-wall sunshine, Cyprus has a small plot twist for you.

A little cloud, a little breeze, a little “is that rain?”

Today will bring increased high cloud across the island, while winds will start from the southwest to northwest at light to moderate speeds before picking up to moderate or strong in some areas.

The sea will generally be slightly rough, although the eastern coast should get off relatively lightly, with conditions ranging from calm to slightly rough.

Temperatures will still be doing their best summer impression, reaching around 36°C inland, 29°C on the west coast, 32°C on the remaining coastal areas and 26°C in the higher mountains.

So yes, the air conditioner can stay employed for another day.

Tonight, things should settle down under mainly clear skies, although some local low cloud may develop. Winds will ease to light, occasionally moderate, while the sea will remain calm to slightly rough along the southern and eastern coasts and slightly rough along the western and northern coasts.

Wednesday brings the first proper tease

Wednesday starts off mainly clear, but after midday, clouds developing locally could bring isolated showers or a thunderstorm, particularly in the mountains and southern parts of the island. Because apparently the mountains have decided they would like some drama. Temperatures on Wednesday should remain fairly steady and slightly above normal for this time of year.

Then comes the good bit for anyone who has spent the last few months melting into their office chair: temperatures will dip slightly on Thursday, making the weather look considerably less summery. Cloud will become thicker at times, with showers and isolated thunderstorms expected after midday, especially in the mountains and inland. There could even be hail during thunderstorms, while showers may return in western areas on Thursday evening. An isolated thunderstorm along the coast cannot be ruled out either.

By Friday expect another drop, bringing temperatures below the seasonal average. The unsettled mood continues, with intermittent cloud and local showers or isolated thunderstorms, mainly over mountainous and inland areas.

So summer isn't quite dead yet, but it does appear to be getting the message that its time is almost up. For now, enjoy your Tuesday. And if you hear thunder from the mountains later this week, just remember: even the weather is ready for a little change of scenery.
