And just like that, it’s Monday again. Back to the office, back to school runs, back to pretending we absolutely love our alarm clocks.
As much as we would happily cling to summer with both hands and refuse to let go, Cyprus is giving us a few hints that the season is slowly packing its bags. Schools are properly back in session, the beaches are a little less chaotic, and even the traffic back home from the coast seems to be saying, “Alright folks, summer’s nearly done.”
But don’t put the sunglasses away just yet.
A seasonal low-pressure system is hanging around the area, and a little dust haze may make an appearance today. Early risers may also have encountered some patchy mist or fog, particularly in the east and inland, because Monday mornings weren’t already atmospheric enough.
Once the morning mist and low cloud clear, most of the island should enjoy mostly clear skies, with a few clouds drifting in from time to time.
The mountains, however, have other plans. Clouds building up around midday and into the afternoon could bring isolated showers, so if you’re heading into the hills, perhaps don’t leave the umbrella sitting smugly at home.
Winds will start off light and variable before turning mainly southwesterly to northwesterly, generally light to moderate. Along some windward coastal areas, they could become locally stronger. The sea will begin calm to slightly rough, becoming slightly rougher along the windward coasts.
And yes, it is still Cyprus in September, so temperatures are not exactly ready for autumn sweaters. We’re looking at around 37°C inland, 31°C on the west and north coasts, 33°C on the remaining coasts, and a relatively refreshing 28°C in the higher mountains.
Tonight, mostly clear skies will stick around at first, although increasing high cloud and some local low cloud will gradually creep in. Winds will ease and become light and katabatic, while the sea will remain calm to slightly rough in the south and east and slightly rough in the west and north.
Tuesday brings periods of increased high cloud, with isolated showers possible after midday, mainly in the mountains and possibly in areas southeast of Troodos. There is also a chance of a brief, isolated thunderstorm.
Wednesday keeps things mostly clear, although afternoon cloud could once again bring an isolated shower or thunderstorm, mainly in the mountains and southeast of Troodos.
By Thursday, the pattern remains much the same: mostly clear skies, with a few afternoon clouds potentially producing an isolated shower or thunderstorm, particularly in the mountains and inland. The good news for anyone whose air conditioner is currently working overtime: temperatures are expected to gradually come down through Thursday, settling closer to what is normal for this time of year.
So there you have it. Monday may have dragged us kicking and screaming back to reality, but at least Cyprus is offering us a few sunny skies, a couple of mountain showers and temperatures that are slowly remembering that autumn exists.
